Sarasota (East of I75)

America celebrates the birth of our Nation on July 4th and the communities Out East of Sarasota celebrate the ground breaking of our long awaited Bee Ridge Road Improvement Project.  The Plan will improve traffic flow for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists while adding a landscaped median and thoroughfare.  See full details from the County below.

Sarasota County has contracted with Westra Construction Corporation of Palmetto to construct the Bee Ridge Road Improvements, from Mauna Loa Boulevard to Iona Road. It will include roadway, county and private utility improvements.

The construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 7 and is expected to be complete by the Summer of 2016. Residents will begin seeing work on the west end of the project and continuing to the east. The contractor will be erecting silt fence along the entire project. Then they will begin clearing the right-of-way and installing water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure. The private utility companies will be relocating phone and power lines. No disruption of service is expected.

The roadway segment west of Bent Tree Boulevard, a distance of 1.68 miles, will be reconstructed to a four-lane divided urban roadway with a landscaped median, 10-foot sidewalk on the south side, bicycle lanes, three roundabouts, landscaping and LED street lighting. The Mauna Loa intersection will remain signalized. The segment from east of Bent Tree Boulevard to Iona Road, a distance of 0.93 miles, will be milled and resurfaced with the addition of bike lanes, a 10-foot sidewalk on the south side, LED street lighting and reconstruction of the Iona Road/Bee Ridge Extension intersection as a one lane roundabout. The utility improvements consist of new construction of water mains, sewer force mains, a lift station and relocation of all private utilities.

Great time to visit Oscar Scherer State Park!  It is getting a bit cooler and the days are still long into the evening.  Take the Legacy Trail by bike to add a bit of exercise to your visit.

If you are looking for animals, then early and late in the day are the best times to be here.  The mosaic of colors, the diversity of plants and animal species, these are what makes nature (and the park) so spectacular, and it’s due to the use of prescribed fire; a necessary tool for land managers. You can see the many changes in the landscape after the burn season.

John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art

One of my favorite places in Sarasota.  A short 20 minute drive to world class art and sculpture surrounded by beautiful, lush Italian gardens.  Make a day of it as there is a lot to see!

Museum of Art

The Museum of Art, built by John Ringling to house his personal collection of masterpieces, today features paintings and sculptures by the great Old Masters including Rubens, van Dyck, Velázquez, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, El Greco, Gainsborough and more. The European, American and Asian masterworks available here make the Museum of Art an awe-inspiring retreat. It is a palace for treasures emulating the footprint of Florence’s Uffizi Gallery, echoing its grace and grandeur.

Bolt SkyIn 1925, Ringling engaged architect John H. Phillips to design the museum.  Construction began in 1927, but was slowed almost immediately by the collapse of Florida’s land boom and later, Wall Street’s stock market crash.  Financial misfortune and Mable’s death in 1929 might have ended the dream, but John Ringling instead gained a new resolve to complete the museum, borrowing money as needed, knowing that it would perpetuate the memory of his beloved Mable.

In October 1931, “The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art” was officially opened to the public.

The Courtyard of the Museum of Art features casts of original antiquities and renaissance sculptures, including the towering David by Michelangelo.  The Courtyard features two fountains – Fountain of Tortoises, one of three replicas from the Piazza Mattei in Rome, and the Oceanus Fountain, copied from the 16th century original by Giovanni Bologna in Florence’s Boboli Gardens.

Special exhibitions are featured in The Ulla R. and Arthur F. Searing Wing, which opened in February 2007.  The galleries mirror the original Museum of Art’s exterior, but makes available expansive exhibit space for major traveling shows.

The Museum and its collections continue to grow.  In 2006, a combined endowment, building and collection gift from noted Asian art collector and philanthropist Dr. Helga Wall-Apelt, substantially bolstered the Ringling Musuem’s Asian art initiative which aims to establish the Museum as an important venue in Florida for the study of Asian Art.

Bike and walking trails, a great pavilion with a BBQ and separate fireplace pit compliment a large toddler and pre-teen playground add to the charm of living out east of Sarasota, Florida.www.scgov.net.

Rothenbach Park at 8750 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota.

The site of former county landfill, the 450-acre park now boasts two recreational trails, a playground, picnic pavilion, restrooms, concession area and one of the state’s largest solar arrays. After closing in 1998, county officials began talking about their vision of taking the former landfill and turning it into the ultimate statement on recycling and living sustainably.

Rothenbach Park features some of the most advanced recycling and sustainable building techniques and materials available today including soy based spray insulation, high reflective roofing materials, recycled content siding, waterless urinals, highly efficient compact fluorescent lighting, composite wood beams and an on-site storm water retention and treatment system.

“When most people talk about recycling they think of tossing paper or plastic into a blue bin. We’re very proud of the fact that we were able to take recycling to a whole new level and the end result is a beautiful new park that can be enjoyed by the entire community. This is really a trash to treasure success story” said McCarthy.
